What Causes Tight Feeling At The Incision Site After Lip Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Sep 2017
Question: Hi Doc,
An Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon removed the contractual scar/banding on my lower lip using Z plasty. I was wondering when the stitches are fully healed, would I still feel tightness/tension in the 'suture site'?
Well, I have many stitches in different parts of my body but they don't bother me - I mean I feel no tension/contraction in those 'suture sites' and so I don't remember about them at all. In this case, I was wondering if the lip stitches would behave the same way or would they create tightness under my lower lip area. What should I expect and what should be my preparation for best results?
Thanx for your kind response. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Tightness likely to be there

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Yes, even after the suture site has fully healed you would possibly still feel the tightness/tension in the area. There is no specific preparation that you need to do for best results. Just maintain hygiene and keep the area clean and dry. You need to realise that the surgery site would never be the same as the normal site and can even be painful to some extent.

Let me know if I could help further.

Well, Doc, I've had stitches in many other parts of my body in the past. I don't feel any tightness/tension in those 'sites' now - so why do you think that the tightness would likely stay this time!?

Brief Answer:
May go away gradually with increased movement of the body part

Detailed Answer:
The tightness can go away with time and with use of the body part. The tightness can due to to pull on the underlying structures. However, it is hard to comment definitively without clinically evaluating the area and without relating to the details of the procedure.
