What Causes Swelling Of Lower Legs With History Of Stomach Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: Hi
Approximately two and a half years ago I had a stomach operation to remove a growth from the area near the esophagus it proved to be benign by all accounts. Surgery removed an artery and part of the stomach... ...I have regular checks and have had 6 month scans which stopped after two years...I have been given the all clear ...
I don't have other health issues .. I don't take meds or store bought drugs I eat sparingly as I suffer a thing called 'dumping syndrome' and therefore have become quite tentative when choosing food.
On the whole I eat vegetables and fruit as my main diet, as these digest without difficulty ... I eat one or two smallish meals a day drink a reasonable amount of water, drink a lot of green tea - snack on nuts blueberries any nutritious food snack and nothing processed ...
Problem... Swelling legs ... I find that my lower legs swell with regularity ... this began 6 months ago and is not improving ... where too from here?? thank you

Brief Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
I dont think this is related to your stomach surgery.
It is possible that certain diet, especially diet lack of proteins and minerals could lead to some vascular pressure changes which can cause oedemas and leg swelling. So you should check your electrolyte and protein blood levels to rule this out.
However, more commonly legs swelling are cause by heart or kidney disorders so this should be checked first. Thirdly, it can be caused by poor venous circulation in legs and you need to do doppler ultrasound to verify circulation.
If all this is fine, then some less common disorders should be considered. In every case, you should take less salty food, keep your legs elevated, regulate body weight,do moderate exercise.
Wish you good health. Feel free to ask. Regards
