What Causes Sudden Weight Loss When Diagnosed With Psoriasis And Hypothyroidism?

default

Question: Hi. I spoke with a doctor last night concerning my stalled weight loss. I have MS and psoriasis, hypothyroidism, etc. In April I was 205 lbs., a weight I have hovered around for 10 years. My doctor told me at that visit I had type 2 diabetes; my A1c was 7.2. He put me on medication and suggested I try to lose 20 lbs, or get down to about 180 lbs. I had made so much progress that a couple months ago I was tested and my A1c is down to 5.9. But my question to the doctor last night was why have I gained 7 lbs. in the last 8-10 days (from 158 to 165)? Seemed like every day I was gaining a pound, yet I was watching my diet. I know I shouldn't weigh so often, but when I got up to pee at 3 a.m. the scale said 162.0. Then 4 hours later when I got up I was 160.8. Can a person lose go from 165 to 160.8 overnight? I really stepped up my exercise (as much as I can) the last couple days, but noticed I'm peeing more often and a lot more volume too (possibly because of drinking more water?). Happy to see the weight loss, but it concerned me to see that big a drop. I recently had a bunch of blood work done and everything was normal except my potassium was low. I now take a 20 MEQ potassium pill each day and started taking fluconazole 3 days ago for a mild case of oral thrust. Didn't know if I should be concerned. I see my regular doctor next on January 30th. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Don't worry the low potasium can be attributed to polyuria.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
I have gone through your query.
I can understand your concern.

1.A person can not go from 165 to 160.8 lbs in four hours. So,i suspect that your body weight machine is not working correctly and i suggets to repeat your body weight measurement.(Let me know the result)

At the other side you mention that you have a increased fluid intake accompanied with high urine output( polyuria). This can one of the causes of your weight fluctuations.

Your body weight can and very often does change as a result of a loss or gain in muscle, fat, water, glycogen, poop, food intake and more. That means daily fluctuations in body weight (plus extra monthly fluctuations for women) are extremely common and normal. So don't be concerned about this problem.

Some fitness specialists consider that Body Weight Fluctuations of 1-4 Pounds a Day are Perfectly Normal.Anyway i suggest to take a strict control with your weight fluctuations.

Here are some tips that can help you:
1.Hydrate Yourself to Lose Water Weight(water retention)
2.Reduce Your Carb Intake
3.Minimize your intake to minimise your water retention
4.Perform Gentle Exercise(A vigorous workout could actually lead to water retention overnight)

Remember:The best time to weigh yourself is first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Be sure to wear as little clothing as possible. (If you do keep any clothes on, be sure to wear that same amount of clothing every time you weigh yourself.)

2.Abot the second problem; In my opinion your low level of potassium can ba attributed to the large amount of urine.(hydrochlorothiazide and excessive water intake can be the cause of your poliuria.)
Don't worry because the potassium pill and eating potassium reach foods that contain like banana, avocado, sweet potato, can help you to normalize the level of potassium.

My advice is to repeat the serum potasium measurement after several days to see if it is normalized(let me know if the hypokalemia persist because in that case there are necessary to do some tests to find the cause)

Hope my information is helpful.
