Question: Last week I was hospitalized and had back surgery. Prior to having the surgery, I was told by hospital staff that I would most like have dry mouth after surgery and I Should get Biotene Dry Mouth Oral Rinse. I did and since surgery, I have had a horrible time with sores in the roof of my mouth, my tongue was completely white, everything tasted so mad that I've hardly eaten. I am brushing my teeth and tongue several times with Arm and Hammer Toothpaste and then rinsing with salt water. What should I do? I am in misery.

Brief Answer:

Looks like yeast infection.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

If the tongue was completely white then it can be due to yeast infection of tongue or tongue thrush.

It can cause dry mouth or dry mouth can also cause tongue thrush.

You need not to brush your teeth many times a day, just do twice that is in morning and at night.

You should start gargling with specialised mouthwash like Magic mouthwash.

Chew sugar free chewing gum if possible as it will reduce dryness in mouth by stimulating saliva flow.

Along with it you can apply oral gel containing Xylocaine, Lidocaine or Choline Salicylate.

You should suck ice or do cool water rinses to reduce pain and inflammation.

If the tongue is still white then you should get it clinically checked by an oral physician, a course of antifungal medicine like Fluconzole and Clotrimazole lozenges can be advised for 15 days.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
