What Causes Soft Painful Spot On The Skull?

Question: My son noticed that my 8 yr old daughter has a soft spot on the middle back upper section of her skull almost at the crown. when touched she says it hurts

Hi,

This lump can have various reasons. It would be difficult to understand it without investigation.
I would advise her to do a cranial CT scan to rule out any bone infection, brain infection, brain tissue injury and brain tumor or other growth. Cranial CT scan will help us identify the nature/cause of this bump.

The spot does not protrude. It is like a baby soft spot. Just not on top of the head like a new born.

The soft spot could be a fontanelle which is a space where two sutures forming a membrane covered soft spot in the skull but since it is tender to touch a cranial CT is needed to rule out brain infection or brain tumor.
