Question: I have a 2 yr 4 month old female kid. she started to walk wen she was 8 months and started to say words since 1.25 yes. but her words were not clear. now a whole year later she still speaks illegibly. nothing much is clear. few things which she has heard me say are like only clear. i had told a pediatrician wen she was 1.25 yrs. he told me to prompt her with books.then words from books - fruits, vegetables, vehicles, body parts ,birds, animals--- but these are single words or XXXXXXX 3 words. she doesn't say any sentences. and if she does, not at all clear. i started play school now say 3 months back. but her vocabulary hasn't improved. we don't stay with grand parents. but I thought play school would help., is this normal? should I take her for speech therapy? by wat age should I start treatment?

Brief Answer: It is normal Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic. She is normal and she does not need speech therapy. In the milestone chart, the development is shown for 50% of the kids. It means that only half of the kids will achieve a particular development milestone by that age and other half will lack behind. It does not mean that the ones that lag behind are abnormal or need therapy. They just develop at their own pace and will soon achieve their milestones. Language is of two types - receptive language and expressive language. Language milestones achieved by a 2 year are as follows: RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE - A 2 year old will point to body parts, objects and pictures in books. Enjoys listening to simple 2 or 3 sentence stories. EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE - vocabulary of 40 - 50 words, sentences of 2 - 3 words, uses descriptive terms, two- thirds of what the child says is understandable, repeats over-heard words. So this is the milestone that only half of the children achieve at 2 years of age. Hope it helps. Dr Vaishalee
