What Causes Severe Nausea And Sweet-smelling Urine?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Mar 2019
Question: I have been waking up nauseous in the mornings for the last week and have a sweet or just strange smell to my urine the last two days. I know I'm not pregnant. I have been avoiding sugar lately and not eating carbs just lean meat and vegetables. Other than that I have been feeling fine. Is this a sign of something bigger than diet change?

Brief Answer:
Could be... more information is required.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

This symptom is not specific enough to diagnose anything, so more information would be required to consider any diagnosis. Other associated symptoms may help like abdominal pain, dizziness, fever, diarrhea, etc. Extreme low-carb diets may sometimes cause some dizziness and perhaps also a smelly breath.

The other alternatives are too many to list here. A basic biochemical profile is needed since the symptoms seem to persist for more than 2-3 days. Tests like the following are usually helpful:
- complete blood count
- glucose
- urea, creatinine
- AST, ALT, ALP, gammaGT
- serum electrolytes
- C-reactive protein

A basic clinical examination is also required, so a visit to your doctor cannot be avoided.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
