What Causes Severe Fatigue And Laryngitis Post Consumption Of Wine?

Question: Hi!
Lately I loose my voice for about 2 weeks every time I drink wine, both red and white. It happens even after just one glass. I get horse, and my body feels very fatigue from using so much energy to produce sound. This does not happen when I drink beer. And wine and beer have a lot of the same ingredients. I never reacted to wine before, although it always tasted a little sour to me. I'm guessing I developed an allergy after I had a small period where I was drinking wine every day. I thought it was acid, but coffee, meat and chocolate is ok. Any idea what I could be reacting to?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Accetaldehyde, a metabolic product of alcohol, seems to be the culprit

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Beer contains a very low concentration of alcohol whereas in wine the concentration is relatively more. Alcohol gets converted to certain chemicals including acetaldehyde that are harmful for the body. It is likely that you are getting laryngeal oedema in response to the same. The same chemical is also responsible for the fatigue you feel.

I think that abstaining from alcohol totally (if feasible) is the best idea for you.

Thank you so much for your answer.

Does hard liqueur like vodka and rum have accetaldehyde in it too? For some reason I do not react to any of them either. It is only wine that causes this problem for me.

Brief Answer:
Liquors produce acetaldehyde while they are metabolized by the body.

Detailed Answer:
Acetaldehyde is not present in liquors. ALL liquors contain alcohol. Alcohol is metabolized by the body. This metabolism produces acetaldehyde. So all liquors produce acetaldehyde while being processed by the body.

I understand that you have specifically noticed the problem with wine. However, it is hard to comment without a chemical assay.
