Brief Answer:
Paronychia is most probable.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/46 - woke up today with pain, swelling and redness on the inside tip of left big toe - does not see bite mark or did not stub it ....

This can be taken as a condition called paronychia, which is usually insidious; the cause can not be found in every case.
I would advise you the following:
Consult your Doctor as you need to take an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicine for which you need a valid prescription.
Keep the affected area elevated above heart level in lying position whenever you are resting.
Apply Liquid Povidone Iodine at least twice daily, locally to the affected area as well as the whole foot to keep the area sterile avoiding the secondary infection.
It is possible that the abscess may not then be formed.

I hope this answer helps you. Please feel free to ask for further relevant query if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
