What Causes Numbness, Tingling And Swelling In Limbs While Treating Rhabdomyolysis?

Question: Hi Dr. My daughter has had rhabdomyolysis before which she recovered from. She is 21. Last night she woke up with numbness, tingling and swelling in her arms and legs. Her hands and feet were cold to touch and her skin had a blue tone to it over her whole body. She had pain up her arms and in her legs. Today the blueness has gone but other symptoms are still with her though not as severe. Am wondering could this be connected to rhabdomyolysis. She is a Jockey, very active. She is taking medication to detox her liver.

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and your concern is understandable.

That episode is worrying. Had it been only for the numbness and tingling one might think of a harmless cause such as anxiety, but the coldness, change of colour, swelling you describe invite for close attention. That description is evocative of Raynaud phenomenon, related to blood vessel spasms in the extremities. Can be a manifestation of several conditions, typically connective tissue disorders such as lupus for example.
Other rarer cause may include electrolyte abnormalities, cryoglobulinemia (which may be caused by chronic liver disease) or cold agglutinin disease. These diagnoses are very much dependent apart from physical exam also from lab testing, so have to consult your physician.

As for the rhabdomyolysis question, no I don't think the two are related, especially if the rhabdomyolysis had a known cause such as trauma
