What Causes Nose Bleeds After Injury In Infant?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: My 17 month old son recently fell down and started bleeding from nose. after 2-3 minutes the bleeding stopped and he became active again. Do i need to be concerned about this? And this is not the first time this has happened. In the past he bled from nose a couple of time after falling down and hitting his head hard against something.
Please let me know if this is cause for concern and should i be reaching out to a physician.

Brief Answer:
Observe the baby for any abnormal symptom

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Due to their playful behavior and poor balancing ability, children of this age are more prone for traumatic injury. The cavity of nose is a highly vascular structure and even minor trauma can cause bleeding. It is very easy to bleed from nose and it is similarly easy to control it even at home by pinching and leaning forward.
Once there is formation of clot the bleeding stops.Teach your baby to avoid picking of nose, blowing, sneezing for next 24 hours as this leads to removal of clot and can cause rebleeding. Keep the surrounding environment moist as dry air can precipitate nose bleed.Putting nasal saline drops also helps in keeping the nose moist.
In case of repeated spontaneous nasal bleed the bleeding/clotting disorder should be rule out. But as the bleeding episodes are not spontaneous and each time it is preceded by trauma I won't get overly worried.

You have mentioned that the child is active and playful. There is no history of vomiting, unconciousness, abnormal movement or altered behavior. So in the absence of all these symptoms I won't get worried.
Although most of these symptoms appear within 6-8 hours but sometimes it may take long to appear. So if you notice any of these I would suggest you to consult your pediatrician immediately.
I hope this helps.
Please do ask if you have any more query.
Regards
