What Causes Nerve Pain All Through Out The Body?

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Oct 2016
Question: I am a critical care nurse and know my body. My body right now is acting really weird. I feel nerve pain only on one side of my body. Under my arm, inner elbow ,across my left lower quadrant of abdomen, around my hip, and down the outside of my left leg. Nerve pain sucks. Then in these areas my skin feels badly burned and hyper sensitive to touch. I feel tingling under my skin. Then I broke out in three areas.....one single blister on my left big toe, another at the base of my second left base toe and then a u shape row of blisters above my left ankle. So I thought athletes foot or maybe ring worm. Treated area with athletes foot spray. Blisters and skin got worse with area turning purple red with more pain and hypersensitivity. I took care of 2 shingle patients both in airborn and contact isolation but had not touched there wounds. What do you think is happening?

Brief Answer:
Herpes zoster

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

It seems that you are having herpes zoster. Row of blisters/vesicles along distribution of peripheral nerve on one side along with burning pain is suggestive of Herpes zoster only.

You can upload/attach close-up photos of the lesions of your left foot and left ankle so that I can take a closer look in to it. Herpes zoster is contagious and can spread from patient to care-givers (you had significant exposure in looking after 2 shingle patients- causing face to-face contact with infectious patient).

Treatment is a course of Antiviral drug i.e. Valacyclovir (1000 mg three times a day for 5-7 days) and local application of Acyclovir cream.

Are you diabetic? Had you been under steroid for any other reason?
All are prescription drugs and to be obtained either from a Physician or Dermatologist.

Regards
