Posted on Tue, 8 Nov 2016
Question: I have a nerve reaction that moves around my lips and yesterday it was on my thumb where the fleshy part is. It gets hard and itchy and paralized and goes away in a day or less. But it comes and goes and it goes on different nerves. Right now it is o0n my lower lip causing my lip to bulge sightly. It both hurts and itches.

Brief Answer:
Starting multivitamin; rule out medication side effect with your doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

These are called muscle spasm, cramps, or Charley Horses - you muscles become suddenly and uncontrollable hard, tight, and extremely painful. They are caused by involuntary muscle contractions. Most people will also have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea as the intestines are also involved.

There are many cause such as:
- Dehydration
- Electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium, potassium deficiency
- Fatigue
- Several different metabolic and endocrine diseases
- and several medications with the most common being: furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, diuretics, donepzil, nifedipine, and severe cholesterol medications

If you recently started a new medication, I would call your prescribing doctor tomorrow and let him know that you are having muscle spasms now. They will have to adjust to a different medication.

I would also highly recommend getting blood work done to rule out any metabolic or endocrine dysfunction.

In the meantime, you can try taking a multivitamin and increase you fluid intake.

Brief Answer:
Electrolyte, metabolic, endocrine dysfunction.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

It is almost always caused by an electrolyte abnormality, but endocrine, metabolic, and dehydration are also very common. Thyroid disease can also cause muscle spasms and involuntary muscle contractions.

I would high recommend getting your blood work drawn to make sure all of your labs are within normal limits.

Essentially, you have too many ions (calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, potassium, bicarbonate, etc) or too much metabolic activity (for example, thyroid dysfunction) which are causing your nerves to fire too much resulting in involuntary muscle contractions.
