What Causes Low Voice And Strain In Throat?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Sep 2014
Question: My voice seems to become strained while I talk as the day goes on. I feel the strain in my throat, and it makes me not want to have a conversation or answer the phone. I often have to talk lower to compensate, but that is not comfortable either. This just started a couple months ago but happens every day. It is definitely uncomfortable and I don't like it. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Brief Answer:
PLEASE MEET A SPEECH THERAPIST

Detailed Answer:
Hello

You seem to be suffering from what is called as phonasthenia , in which their is voice fatigue and strain on throat.

There can be many reasons for this , the most common being voice misuse or voice abuse, that means either talking too loudly or forced whispers or talking for too long time.

Voice fatigue can also be seen in many neurological conditions and these also heave to be ruled out by a doctor by doing a complete neurological examination.

It can also be due to a mass/lesion on your vocal cords.

Therefore i would like you to meet a speech therapist and an ent doctor , who will examine you and guide you further.

In the mean time , i would like you to avoid tea , coffee , spicy food, smoking , alcohol and if possible dairy products as all these will aggravate your voice problems.I would also like you to avoid whispering or trying to speak in low tones as these will also put a lot of strain on your vocal cords.

Take care
