What Causes Lack Of Change In BP Readings While On Starcad Beta 25mg?
Question: Dear Sir,
I have ask for help on hypertension in last week and was responded by Dr Modi. After taking starcad beta 25mg for a week, there is no reduction in BP, whereas now no chest pain observed. My BP is still 166/98 but not having any discomfort. My family doctor suggested to take Losar H in the morning and starcad beta 50 mg in the evening. Please suggest.

Dear Sir
I would like to share a few facts with you.
1. Medications used to control blood pressure show their full effect by 2-3 weeks after starting the drug.
2. Losar (losartan) like drugs (Angiotensin receptor inhibitors) and Starpress (metoprolol) like drugs (Beta blockers) are not considered effective combination for treatment of blood pressure.
3. Beside the medication, you need reduction in weight as your body mass index is ~25.5. Try to lose at least 2-3 Kgs. Reduce your salt intake. Do relaxation exercises/ yoga. Do brisk walk daily. Avoid alcohol, if you drink.
4. A combination of ARB with a calcium channel blocker would be more scientific combination if you really require two drug therapy.
5. The target level is less than 140/90 mmHg.
6. You should measure BP 2-3 times a week, preferably at same time of day. You must not have drank tea/coffee or undergone exercise in last 1 hour and you must not be under physical or mental stress at that time.
7. Discuss these facts with your local doctor and obtain a new prescription if required.
