What Causes Involuntary Vomiting After Eating?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: For the last few YEARS I have had an issue with involuntarily vomiting after I eat. I have never experienced issues with eating disorders & the vomiting does not happen after every single meal but does happen on a pretty regular basis. I will feel perfectly fine but then I eat & get sick after a few bites or right after my food then I feel fine again. I have no idea if this is an ulcer or possibly tape worm(??) it is even more of an issue now because I am coming up to 5 months pregnant & I can not have this keep happening & losing vital nutrients for myself & baby. I drink wine on occasion (NOT NOW while pregnant) I do not smoke.

When I did go to the Doctor, maybe about a year ago by now, I had to go somewhere to drink some weird drink & they scanned my stomach then told me it was NOT an ulcer at that time. I am frustrated & confused. This is making it very hard & scary for me to eat for fear of throwing up my food!

Help & answers would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Possible Cyclical Vomiting Synndrome.Need to avoid triggers.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam.

I understand your query and concern.

As per your history you probably seem to have Idiopathic Cyclical Vomiting syndrome/CVS.

This is usually a benign disorder and you need worry much on this.

In the absence of known pathology treatment of cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) remains empirical.

The following management strategies can be used in your case

1.Avoidance of triggers- Ex chocolate, cheese, monosodium glutamate (MSG)Sleep deprivation, car rides and stress.

2.Prophylactic and abortive therapy-Drugs like Promethazine and Phenobarbital only can be used since you are a pregnant only in consultation with your Obstetrician.

3.Supportive care during acute episodes-With Oral or IV Glucose Solutions.

4.Family support-Most Important.

Consultation with a sympathetic gastroenterologist without drug therapy may decrease the frequency of vomiting episodes by as much as 70%.

Thank you.
