What Causes Increased Nausea At Night?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Question: I am having increasing "attacks" of night time nausea. I use to get them about once every 6 months but recently am having them once a week or every other week. It's extremely debilitating. I have GERD and am on a GERD diet, Protonix, I have elevated my bed, don't eat before bed, blah blah but it's getting worse. Anything else I can do? also take Zofran when this happens, as well as ginger chewing gum.

Brief Answer:
ilaprazole, levosupiride and famotidine and lifestyle modifications will benefit you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM). I understood your concern. I will suggest you to:
1. Avoid fatty meals
2. Don’t lie down soon after meals for at least two hour
3. Take small and frequent meals, instead of full meals at a time
4. wear loose clothes
5. If you are overweight or obese do weight reduction with dieting and exercise

Among the medications:
1. I would suggest the use of levosulpiride. It don't simply act as a prokinetic agent but it also increase the tone of lower esophageal sphincter
2. Baclofen also helps in increasing tone of lower esophageal sphincter
3 Instead of protonix, I suggest ilaprazole which has better efficacy, and I found it very useful in my patients
4. Also add tablet famotidine at bed time

For loose stools take a course of probiotic and tablet rifaximin as patients who take proton pump inhibitor for long time may develop bacterial overgrowth leading to diarrhoea

You may discuss with your doctor about these medicines with your doctor
I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. If you have any further query I will be happy to answer that too. Remain in touch and get-well soon.
