Question: My wife (77) goes from feeling too hot to freezing cold. This swing can occur in the same day several times. The room environment is unchanged.

I understand your concern for your wife here .
You need to understand that she is experiencing post menopausal symptoms which is specifically seen in form of HOT FLASHES and sudden cold periods many a tomes during day. This is specifically because of decrease oestrogen content in her body.

It is suggested that she should get her serum oestradiol levels checked and should consult her physician for initiating a low dose hormonal replacement therapy or HRT.
Though there are some long term side effects of the same but effects on heart are more evident if HRT is used continuously for 5 years or more. She can be placed on the same for 2 years and then a 6 monthly break can be given to reduce the risks.
This shall not only improve her daily life but also her bodily incapacitating symptoms.
