Question: Hi doctor ,
My dad very often suffer from headache due to acidity .
It mainly happens when the meal time is not fixed and the dinner is eaten too late and immediately he goes to sleep like after 15-20 minutes .
In the night time his sleep is disturbed and when he burps like real loudly he feels comfortable.
This continues for sometime and then its all fine .
Please suggest what can be done in such a situation .
And is it true that this headache is due to acidity ?

Brief Answer:
The symptoms seems to be pertaining to GERD

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thanks for posting your query,

I have read through your query and I can certainly understand your concern,

The symptoms your dad is facing seems to be pertaining to GERD. He also seems to have a mild case of migraine which exacerbates on skipping a meal or irregular meal times.

I would like to know how long it has been since he has stopped taking Pantocid D and Gel MPS, as if it has been quite sometime, then it would be for his best to restart again for a while.

I would suggest you to do the following:
- Diet restrictions:
* avoid too much tea or caffeine. He may take it once daily.
* have properly timed meals.
* substitute three main meals with 5 small meals, thereby not leaving the stomach empty.
* avoid taking dinner meal atleast 1 hour prior to going to bed
* consume food which are less fatty, oily and spicy as this will reduce the secretion of gastric acid causing these symptoms.
* drink plenty of water. Always take 1-2 glasses of water prior to eating.
* include more fibers and yogurt in his daily diet.
* avoid much stress as it will also result in acid secretion.
* use two pillows while reclining during bed time so as to prevent acid reflex causing him to burp loudly

If I was his treating physician, I would start him on Esomeprazole once daily for a period of 2 weeks along with Gel Mps after food. I would also suggest him to do a H. pylori test. H. pylori is the organism causing gastric ulcers and if found out, it could be treated medically.

Hope I have answered to your query,
Please feel free to discuss further or else kindly close and give your feedback.

Warm regards
