What Causes Hallucinations In The Elderly?

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Apr 2023
Question: I am 88 and started to have hallucinations. The first one was going to bed and I saw a million stars glittering all around the room until I closed my eyes. There were a couple of hearing someone call my name and a few of someone pushing me when waking from a nap on my recliner. lately I saw a small dark figure off in the near distance, then a dark face a few inches from mine, then a 7 foot giant in full color. All appeared when waking for about one second when waking from the recliner during the day. Never in bed or at night

Brief Answer:
My suggestion.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It is evident that these are psychotic symptoms, but we need to rule out any organic conditions at your age.

So, I would like to know if there is any history of head injury or any other memory changes.

If there is nothing significant about organic history, you can start any antipsychotic.

Discuss with your doctor regarding this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Had a concussion in 1938. No head injuries since. What type of doctor should I go see? I have family doctor who does not treat geriatrics as a specialty.

My suggestion.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I can certainly understand that you had a history of head injury long back. It may not be significant for the current symptoms.

I would like to advise you to get all routine blood investigations done like CBC, RBS, ECG, blood electrolytes, CT brain plain.

You have approached the right specialist for your problem.
You need to consult psychiatrist for your symptoms.

Hope this information would help you.
