What Causes Ectopic Heart Beats After Cardiac Ablation?
Question: I am a 27 year old female with a hx of svt and cardiac ablation in 2006. since then I have had ectopic heart beats as seen on holtors monitors. I am scheduled to see the electrophysiologist in January due to increased palpitations and feeling like I am having runs of them. could this be nsvt (non sustained ventricular tachycardia) if so is it dangerous? I am over weight and currently on a weight loss program to do 160 min of cardio a week Today after my workout I had several skipped beats. is thos dangerous? At times when I cough it will stop the skipped beats (which ik are extra beats). I take 50 mg labetalol b.I.d (use to take 100 but reduced due to bradycadia. Please help as these have me very worried and effecting my quality of life ; (

Sometimes after ablation therapy for SVT, patients may feel ectopic beats but they are usually not dangerous. No need to think about NSVT at present. They are usually APCs or VPCs (atrial or ventricular premature complexes)
My advice to you is -
1. If you still have anxiety regarding ectopic beats, go for 48 hrs holter monitoring again and ask your doctor whether it is NSVT or not. If holter report is good then ignore the palpitations in future because anxiety will precipritate palpitations unnecessarily.
2.Ventricular trigeminy should be treated but you are already on labetolol. Just consult your doctor regarding exact dosage. Too high a dosage will give rise to bradycardia and hypotension.
3. Whenever you feel palpitations just calm down and better stop your work for a while. Take a deep breath and divert your mind to other things. In simple VPCs also uneasiness and palpitations are common.
So my advice is just you clear your doubts again with holter monitoring but I think mostly the ectopic beats are VPCs or APCs and not NSVTs after ablation for SVTs. So don't think about NSVT at present.
