What Causes Calcium Level And Creatinine Level To Be High?
Question: I just got some records from my son's doctor and noticed that some lab results from lab work he had done in December is abnormal. The BUN/creatinine ration says high, 23.6 and the calcium level says high, 10.3.
I took him in for concerns about possible juvenile diabetes because he was excessively thirsty and urinating a lot more than normal, as well as very tired. His blood sugar was fine.
It does not show any of the other results. What do high levels of BUN/creatinine ration and calcium indicate?

Firstly, about the serum calcium. If it is total calcium, it is more-or-less normal or slightly elevated. If it is ionised calcium level, then only it is quite high. I believe it is total calcium, so dont worry.
Now for the BUN/creatinine ratio, it is a bit on the higher side. Acute kidney injury, high dose corticosteroids, gastrointestinal bleeding like hematemesis or malena, dehydration are common causes of increased ratio. You have already told that your son is tired and thirsty, so dehydration can be a cause. However, other causes should be ruled out.
I would suggest you to take him to a doctor and get examined thoroughly. Give him plenty of oral fluids, healthy diet and adequate rest. You can get a repeat report done after 10-15 days and get back to me with the feedback.
