Brief Answer:
Can be caused by injury or infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Knee bursitis can be caused by:
Frequent and sustained pressure, such as from kneeling- usually causes infra patellar bursitis.
A direct blow to your knee
Bacterial infection of the bursa
Complications from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or gout in your knee
The treatment is done with rest, compression bandage, elevation of the leg, local steroids, aspiration of the knee in case there is fluid. Antibiotics and pain killers may be needed in case there is an infection.
Hope my answer is helpful.
