Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: Hi, My son, age 57, has Hemochromatosis, is physically fit, and follows his conditions treatment plan. He called me today complaining about an abdominal mass or bulge that has appeared in the upper right quadrant of his abdomen, below the rib cage. He is not experiencing any pain as a result of the bulge.
What can be the problem?

Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that your son has hemochromatosis and recently he found a bulge just below the right rib cage. This is not related to his hemachromatosis. This is more than likely a small hernia. These hernia don't usual cause pain and can come about from straining while exercising or during bowel movements. I would recommend that he see his medical provider so they can properly diagnose the issue. Sometimes these hernia need surgery to close or repair the defect but not always.
