What Causes A Spontaneous Bleed From The Scrotum After Taking Iburprofen ?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: My husband is 87. He has vericose veins and bad arthritis in his knees and foot.
He has been taking Ibuprofen for a few weeks and felt that it was helping the arthritis pain. However, last week a vein on his scrotum spontaneously bled. He applied pressure and stopped the bleeding. He mentioned it to his primary doctor last week. The doctor said the Ibuprofen might be the cause. He stopped taking so much Ibuprofen, but did not stop it completely. This afternoon, as he was preparing to shower, the same vein on his scrotum bled again. What should he do about this?

Brief Answer:
Keep pressure and can change analgesic

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Yes, Iburprofen affects platelets clotting mechanism and even mild injury can lead to bleeding.
2. Also, the blood vessels are thin and due to aging, are very fragile.
3. Need to keep pressure on bleed now and allow it to completely heal. Avoid any sort of rubbing on it, as it could dislodge the clot. Avoid disturbance around the area for a weak and allow it to heal. Avoid infection, and keep area clean and dry. It will heal.
4. Ibuprofen can be replaced with celecoxib, a selective analgesic without any effect on platelets. You can discuss this with your doctor.
5. Other methods of pain relief like heat application, knee joint support, comfortable foot wear, physiotherapy can also be tried for arthritis.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
