What Causes A Bump On Base Of The Skull After A Head Injury?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Jul 2014
Question: My 6-year old daughter fell from a four-foot counter directly onto a cement floor. This was nice hours ago, and she has a rather large bump at the base of her skull. All her behaviors are normal - active, coloring, eating - but she is VERY sensitive to the touch and didn't want to put her head on her pillow. The bump has not gone down in size and I'm concerned she may have a concussion. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
that is mostly a hematoma

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

But as she is behaving normally, so chances of a concussion are very less.

That bump is mostly a hematoma (blood clot). It will take a week or so to resolve, depending upon its size. And yes it is very painful. She won't let you touch it or comb. She can lie on the side.

Give her a painkiller tablet at half the adult dose for pain relief and early resolution of the lump.

Hope i have been helpful.

Regards,
Dr. Ashish Verma
