What Can I Do About Adenocarcinoma On The Periphery Of My Lung With A Malignant Tumor As Shown On A PET Scan?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2022
Question: I had radiation for a stage one adenocarcinoma on the periphery of my lung, followed by a PET scan 3 weeks later. The PET showed both the tumor and surrounding tissue still metabolizing. I thought the tumor would be dead, and although my doc did not appear concerned, I am very concerned. Maybe I should have opted for surgery.

I also have Lynch syndrome and have had surgery twice for colon cancer with a 23-year hiatus. The lung tumor is primary, not related to the colon tumor. My oncologist informed me the lung tumor is an aggressive form of adenosarcoma and not a good candidate for chemo. He plans to treat it with immunology therapy, depending on the results of the next PET. I am extremely concerned the tumor might be spreading while we wait for the next PET.

Brief Answer:
Surgery followed by chemotherapy.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

As you are having stage 1 adenocarcinoma of lung my advise to you is to go for surgery followed by chemotherapy.

PET CT can be done later after surgery and chemotherapy as adenocarcinoma variety pf lung cancer spreads very rapidly

You did not address my concern. Trying again: I completed a course of radiation for the stage one lung tumor. The PET scan taken 3 weeks later showed both the tumor and adjacent tissue still metabolizing. I thought the tumor would be dead. How long can it take to "die", and could the tumor metastasize after being radiated?

Brief Answer:
Chances of metastasis remains even after radiation

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Since the PET CT scan after radiation shows tumour and adjacent tissue still metabolising the chances of spreading to other parts of body like liver and bones are almost negligible; but some remnant cancer cells may still remain and it may spread further. That is why I'll advise you to go for surgery by thoracic surgeon followed by chemotherapy
