Brief Answer:
Different possible causes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Sore throat is most commonly caused due to an acute viral infection (cold/flu). In some cases, the sore throat starts before any other symptoms Example: cough, runny nose etc.
Sore throat can also be due to bacterial infection of the throat example strep throat. It can also occur in persons with severe reflux or a post nasal drip of mucus.

Up to 1 out of 5 persons with post nasal drip are not aware of the drip itself and present with the associated symptoms such as sore throat or cough.Sore throat can also be due to trauma to the throat. In rare cases, a prolonged case of sore throat can be due to dangerous changes (cancer changes), occurring. This is very uncommon.
