Brief Answer:
depending on kind of operation

Detailed Answer:
it depends on the kind of surgery and how long it will take, if it is a big one and will last for a long time, then the body will need this fluids to replace long hours of fasting, or transfer of blood if the operation is ( bloody ), on the other hand if it is small operation and will not take so much time, it is ok not to take fluids .

It was a umbilical hernia surgery. Not big or an emergency repair. Surgery took approx 1 hr. I was under general anesthesia. I had an iv on the top of my hand and I do believe the vein was obstructed the entire time and the fluid did not go in my body.

Brief Answer:
no sir i would not

Detailed Answer:
it has no negative effect on your body by any mean, umbilical hernia is not a major surgery as you mentioned and if the vein was obstructed, then the fluids will not run through it and it will stop by its self. Do not worry. The most important thing that the operation had gone smoothly without any complication .
