What Are The Chances Of Recovery Without Dependence On Supplementary Oxygen For An NSIP-ILD Patient With Low Blood Saturation Level?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Aug 2023
Question: My father is a NSIP - ILD patient. He was having low blood saturation level and we admitted him to the hospital. After a couple of days, he still can't live without supplementary oxygen. His requirements though decreased to 5L/M now with 95% SpO2. Can you please advise what can I expect from here on? Would he be able to recover from here to live without supplementary oxygen in near days?

Brief Answer:
Depends on the degree of the disease

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

The recovery depends on the degree of fibrosis within the lung with cellular type of the disease having a better prognosis than the fibrotic type. However, if the degree of fibrosis no significantly affecting the alveolar function then it should be expected that he becomes able to breathe independently and recover oxygen saturation in the following few days but if the alveolar function is significantly affected then you should consider using oxygen therapy at home which will also decrease the burden of low oxygen level on the heart function.

I hope you find this helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

I am actually worried about the 24 hours supplementary oxygen requirements, if that becomes mandatory after the acute exacerbation. As long as he recovers and requires oxygen at home for 30 minutes to an hour a day, should be fine.

Brief Answer:
Extent of fibrosis

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The duration of oxygen therapy replacement should be determined according to the extent of fibrosis and the oxygen therapy will protect from the cardiac complications that might arise in the future.

I hope you find this helpful.
