This Morning When I Woke Up As I Was Getting

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Aug 2019
Question: This morning when I woke up as I was getting out of bed (rather quickly) I experienced a rather violent dizziness episode that made me lie right back down on the pillow. I waited there a few moments and then attempted to get up more slowly but right after I was in a sitting position, it happened again so I laid back down again. The third time I was able to get up slowly and tonight I am up and about, but it was terribly scary - I can't remember this happening before. I am a 76 year old healthy woman.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ma’am

After reviewing the medical query raised by you I can very well understand your concern and the scenario which you have faced and I would like to tell you that the symptoms which you have detailed here I suggested that you had an episode of postural hypotension which occurs when a person stands up quickly from a recumbent position and is more likely to happen as the age advances.

With advancing age the elastic recoil of our blood vessels especially arteries reduces as they become stiffer due to which blood pools in the lower limbs and when we stand up suddenly the vessels are unable to push adequate amount of blood back towards the heart against gravity due to which such symptoms occur.

It’s advisable that even if you are healthy just take a moment getting up from lying down position as this will help your body to adapt there by preventing symptoms.

Kind Regards

Thank you, Dr. Partap, very much!! I will follow your advice in getting up more slowly. Is there anything else I should watch out for - I don't seem to have any other symptoms. Does this require any medication? Sincerely, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
