Suggest Treatment For Swollen Leg

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: My husband's right leg is swollen below the knee to his foot and the area is warm to the touch. He said that he felt a slight "something" when he stood up from the table during lunch last night. He has hypertension, does this sound like it may be related to hypertension or does it sound like a pulled or strained "something"?

It is not likely related to his hypertension. Peripheral vascular disease is the high blood pressure complication that is associated with the legs.
This refers to reduced blood flow in the arteries in the legs. It does not cause swelling.

It is possible that it is muscular strain particularly since he noted an initial abnormal sensation but a deep vein thrombosis (clot in the leg) needs to be ruled out.

Deep vein thrombosis would cause pain, swelling , increased warmth as well.

It would be best for him to be seen as soon as he can.

If it is a strain , then the use of anti inflammatory pain killers such as ibuprofen, cataflam or naproxen is appropriate.

If it is a clot (this would be determined by doppler ultrasound) then anti coagulants (medication to prevent clotting) would be started.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
