default
Posted on Mon, 15 Jun 2015
Question: Hello, I have quite a few scars over my body, all from different times and all healed a while ago. I have started getting raised bite like itchy lumps all over but they are only on my scars and not on healthy skin, what is this?

Brief answer....you seem to have either keloids or hypertrophic scars
Detailed answer...
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Your symptoms suggest that you are having either keloids or hypertrophic scars.
Clinically keloids are abnormal scars which extend beyond the original boundary of injury.
These are raised growths which are associated with itching and pain.
Hypertrophic scars are defined as scars which don't extend beyond the original boundaries of wound.
Difference between a hypertrophic scar and keloid is mostly made by a microscope.

Treatment involves local steroid injections in the scar and sometimes surgical incision, however hypertrophic scars respond better to steroid injections.
Recently other treatments like laser or cryosurgeries have also been introduced.
The best for you would be to consult a surgeon and discuss with him the modality of treatment.
Other side of story is that keloids have tendency to reoccur more after the treatment as compared to hypertrophic scars.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks

I thibk i knew that some of the scars are keloid scars, as the are really quite deep, however these really look more like bites, they come in the morning and gone by the evening, and then again the nextday but on different scars, is there anything else it might be? Because im not even sure they are bites because im normally very rarely bitten. Unless there is something that prefers scar tissue?

Hello,
Since the problem of itching and bites is limited and confined to scars so it is not a general allergy. You can start taking an antihistaminic like ALLEGRA 180 mg once daily in the night for few days and see the result.
I don't think there is anything else in it.
Do consult a surgeon for further management.
Thanks
