Question: My 17 year old daughter, soon to be 18, has a fear of needles that is causing problems at school. Classmates mention the 'N' word and she reacts screaming and hollering and retreats out of the room. Ideas?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

This is a specific phobia. It is best treated with exposure therapy by a trained therapist. I would look for a CBT or exposure therapist in your area who can treat your daughter. Until that time, simply be as understanding and warm as you can, and if she is having trouble at school, offer to speak to her teachers about it so that they can stop other children from bothering her.

Thank you Doctor.

CBT? Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist? Will that typically be something in the yellow page listing?
