Suggest Treatment For Low Testosterone Levels And Lack Of Libido

Question: I am a 68 year old male who became impotent about a year ago. My wife is 63 and we are not ready to give up our sexual activity yet. I visited my GP about 3 months ago and requested help with my problem. She agreed that giving up sex should not have to occur if we could determine what was causing my issue. I was tested for testosterone levels and it was discovered that my levels were low. She discussed my options for treatment which included tablets, underarm application and injections. After listening to the possible side effects, including potential heart problems my wife and I thought it might be safer to do nothing at all. I do not want to accept the fact I am not interested in sex because of an absent libido so I am ready to take the next step of starting a regimen of testosterone replacement therapy. But now what? Would you suggest the underarm delivery method, the pills or the injections?

Brief Answer:
Need to find cause for low testosterone

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
Testosterone has minimal side effects like prostate enlargement, abnormal cholesterol profile, worsening snoring , elevated blood counts and fluid retention etc. However, these are rare ( except Prostate enlargement). The best way would be to start with skin application patches. The advantage is that, it is short acting and can be stopped if you experience undesired side effects. Injections stay in the body for longer time.

It is important to know why your testosterone level is low. I hope they did an LH test and Thyroid blood profile as well. Before starting testosterone treatment, we would like to get a baseline fasting sugar level, prostate levels ( PSA), Lipid profile and CBC.

Regards
Binu
