Suggest Treatment For Low BP, Severe Gas And Inability To Swallow

default
Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Question: This morning I had an episode that quickly followed a bowel movement. I felt faint and almost fell down passed out. I quickly sat down and took my bp...99/60. I had considerable gas and was unable to swallow. I laid down and elevated my legs. Fairly soon my bp came to normal. I have had previous events post bowel movement when I became quickly tired. Could this be vasovagal syncope?

Also, my hr was 52.

Brief Answer:
Yes, his is most likely vasovagal syncope!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what you experienced. This is most likely vasovagal shock. It occurs when for any reason the body over stimulates the parasympathetic system leading to a drastic drop in autonomic nervous functions such as heart rates, breathing, extensive vasodilation, blood pressure, etc. This leads to decreased blood supply to the brain and vital organs. This eventually causes you to feel dizzy, pass out, etc. The good news is that many persons do not need any particular medical attention but some will require help lest they get into serious complications. Because this happens often during stools, I will recommend you try to be more gentle and do not strain. Eat healthy and maintain the stool soft such that stooping would be a fairly smooth and not too effort requiring act.

I am happy with the measures you adopted. However, avoid being in areas where you may not be able getting help if such a scenario occurs. I will also like to see you report this incident to your cardiologist and get fully evaluated just to make sure there is nothing we are missing out on.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
