doctor
Answered by Dr. Shailja Puri (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Iron can be removed by removal of blood or by drug therapy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

High iron in blood results from increased iron overload or genetic defect which causes iron to accumulate in body.
Multiple blood transfusions can also lead to accumulation of iron.
It would be more helpful if you could talk in detail about the cause of excessive iron in body.
Excess iron can be removed from body by blood letting or removal of blood.
The other method is use of drugs which selectively remove iron from blood.

Thanks and take care

Brief Answer:
Reports show presence of hemochromatosis-genetic condition of iron overload

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,

Thanks for posting your reports.
The iron and ferritin levels are high.
The transferrin saturation is also high.
These values clearly show that there is iron overload.
You have genetic test for hemochromatosis gene (HFE) which shows mutation for one gene.
This mutation is responsible for iron overload.
Management of hemochromatosis consists of blood letting or phlebotomy, prevention of iron rich foods and chelation therapy.
Non vegetarian food is rich source of iron and this it should be avoided.
Phlebotomy and chelation therapy is planned according to the clinical condition of the patient.
The treatment is aimed to keep the ferritin levels below 50 microgram / Litre.
Long term follow up is required to control iron and ferritin levels and to prevent development of complications due to iron overload.
You need to consult a hematologist for further management.

Brief Answer:
Mutation is detected in HFE gene which is causing iron overload.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,
A mutation is detected in HFE gene which is compound heterozygous mutation.
This mutation is not the commonest one and its expression is variable.
However, in your case this mutation has caused expression and there is iron overload.
Mutations may express them selves, may remain silent or may have variable penetrance.
Another person with same mutation may not have iron overload so the expression is variable.
Since, your iron and ferritin levels are high, you need to take treatment for it.
