Question: My son is 1 year old. Had started loose motion since 23 March. We are suspecting fairly milk first time causing the problem. We started z&d from 26th from 28doctor gave derolac and flox since it had mucus such as dycentry. On 31st there is some blood in it. We called doctor he gave oflomac. But till today 2nd April, the blood is there and he is still doing it 7-8 times a day. Blood is less when he is doing in a good quantity. Mucus and blood is there when he is doing it in less in quantity. We are giving ors. Madicines are z&d, oflomac and derolac. As food we are giving rice, potato, raw banana boiled, cerelac one time, dexolac primium 3 2-3 times only. Is it worrying ? Medicine change required?

Brief Answer:
Firstly try cleaner water

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

If your baby is having diarhea with mucous and blood, my first suggestion will be to give him cleaner water with ppm less than 30, preferably from reverse osmosis technique. Even ORS should be made in cleaner water. Milk also should come from a good reliable hygienic source. Has he been breast fed or formula fed?

Regarding antibiotics, it does take 3-5 days for antibiotics to work. Also he must be checked for typhoid fever with tests like typhidot and widal.

Its not worrying. It can be easily controlled with hygienic food and appropriate medicines. Regarding antibiotics, ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone and fluoroquinolones are given with precaution in babies and children as they may cause gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal side effects. Cephalosporins are better alternatives.

Hope it helps.
