Suggest Treatment For Broken Ankles

Question: I just wrote everything out and my question was deleted. Ok, I broke my ankle yesterday. I will need surgery Tuesday. I am so scared to get a blood clot. I have never broken a bone before. I have MTHFR homozygous C677T and von Willebrands and possibly Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (but the hematologist I saw recently didn't think so). I haven't received the results of that or my homocysteine levels yet. My BIL died in 2010 from a PE after knee surgery. I am terrified that will happen to me.

Brief Answer:
Cahnces of blood clot are lesser than with a knee surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
After an ankle surgery It takes usually 3-4 weeks for the bone to heal. Early ambulation can be done with a walking boot after 2 weeks. Lesser the period of bed rest, lesser will be the chances of blood clot or PE.
You can discuss regarding this with your operating surgeon so that appropriate investigations can be done and precautions can be taken to prevent the blood clot formation. Surgery is the best option for you as it will allow an early healing and early mobilization thus reducing the chances of blood clot formation.
I hope this answers your query.

I am doing leg exercises in the bed and gotten up on the crutches briefly three times today as this just happened last night. I hope that will also help my chance of getting a DVT or PE. I will be on anticoagulation therapy and a compression boot after I believe that's what they said. I'm keeping my leg elevated above my heart and knee but can't seem to find a comfortable position as I'm in a lot of pain. I haven't taken any pain meds as they make me feel weird but I am giving in and picking some up soon. Just let me know if I am doing everything right. The doc called and I will be taking baby aspirin twice a day until the morning before surgery.

Brief Answer:
You are taking all the precautions already.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The leg exercises will help in decreasing the chances of DVT considerably. Anticoagulation therapy will help further in reducing any further complication. You need not worry. You are already taking all the precautions. Do take pain killers as and when required. The pain will reduce considerably 2-3 days after the surgery.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Well my husband left me to get my pain meds with three kids alone and I asked my daughter to watch the baby while I had the toddler. All I kept hearing was crying from the baby so I asked her to get him a bottle. I ended up scooting down the stairs and then crutches my way into the kitchen and my crutch slipped on something wet and I landed somewhat on my splint. Now it's more painful. Do I go in or just wait till Tuesday and stay on top of my pain meds?

Brief Answer:
If there is considerable pain then do consult your surgeon.

Detailed Answer:
If there is a considerable swelling at the site of fall and there is any visible bruise then you should get yourself examined. If the pain is mild and bearable with no increase in swelling or any new swelling then you can wait till Tuesday. Do inform your surgeon regarding the fall so that he can examine you carefully for any fresh injuries.
Regards.

I can't tell if swelling is worse because I'm in a splint. Should I remove the splint and see?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Praveen Tayal (45 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Look for swelling of toes.

Detailed Answer:
Instead of removing the splint just see if the splint feels tight or there is any swelling or numbness of the toes. You are not likely to injure any bones inside a splint.
Regards.
