Suggest treatment for acne

Posted on Mon, 11 Sep 2017 in Skin Hair and Nails
Question: Hi I m 29 yrs old female with sjogrens syndrome. I m taking myfortic since July 2013. I never had acne except for blackheads in my life. But for the past month I have some bumps in my cheek area. I can attach a photo if needed. It gets itchy sometimes. Washing my face worsens it. In don't know if it is acne or something else.

hello. thank you for writing to us.

I am Dr. Kakkar(dermatologist). I have read your question and I have viewed the image.

Yes, they are acne - mainly whiteheads (closed comedones) and a few papules.
I suggest you to use benzoyl peroxide gel topically at day time e.g Microbenz 3.5% gel. It is comedolytic and antibacterial.
At night you may use a combination preparation of adapalene 0.1% + clindamycin 1% gel (Deriva CMS gel). Adaoalene is comedolytic and first line treatment for mild to moderate acne.. Before applying topical medicines wash your face with a gentle cleanser e.g Cetaphil gentle cleansing lotion.
Avoid all makeup, moisturizers, sunscreens etc on face.

Thank you doctor. If you don't mind me asking, why am I getting acne as an adult when I never had it before. Should I be concerned with any hormonal issues. Kindly let me know.

Brief Answer:
You have mild acne

Detailed Answer:

Acne is quite common at young age even in adults. Acne is no longer seen only seen in teenagers. Stress, diet, weather, hormonal imbalances at the time of menses, cosmetics etc (foundation, sunscreens, moisturizers) each have a role to play. However your acne is mild and doesn't seem to be hormonal. It should respond with topical medications alone.
