Suggest Treatment For Abscess On One Side Of Neck

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Jan 2015
Question: Abscess. Doctor did incision a week back and yesterday again he cut it again to drain completely and packed. He said packing is important so that wound heals from inside. It is too painful while the previous doctor who performed first incision said it's upto me if I want packing. Pus is still coming out of the wound and cut is big. I am just concerned if this thing is really abscess and incision is the best thing, moreover I will get better.

Brief Answer:
Packing always better with big abscesses!

Detailed Answer:
H and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this abscess. Main treating for an abscess is incision and wound drainage. If it is a big abscess with a deep incision such that the incision can easily close, then it is best to pack so as to maintain the opening for proper drainage. Packing would be followed by regular wound dressing of maybe 1 or 2 days maximum if it is still draining a lot.

Would you get better? For sure, yes. Please, where is this abscess located? Can you also kindly provide a picture for review?

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more clarifications if need be. Keep me posted on the progress.

Incision is below head on backside of neck on left side. It is now dressed. I will try to take pic when it is undressed again.

Doctor told me packing is to cut off oxygen for the bacteria inside.

Also how long this will keep on draining. It is draining for 7 days now.

Brief Answer:
Dressing and monitoring would help with this!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Packing is never to cut air from the germs. Oxygen can very well pass through all the materials used in packing. The healing process and time would greatly depend on the size and depth of this abscess. However, it should drain less as the days pass by until it finally gets resolved.

If the treatment isn't improving, the doctors may need to look into other effectiveness of your antibiotics. How often do you get this wound dressed in a day?

I await the picture and hope this addressed your question fully. I am available and ready to respond to more concerns as they arise.
