Question: I am unfortunate enough to be allergic to formaldehyde. I have found that it is near impossible to escape it. I guess my question is do you know of any material that can be used as a barrier to block the fumes ?

Brief Answer:
Preventive measures.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

From what I understand you have skin allergies secondary to contact with formaldehyde. We refer this condition as allergic contact dermatitis. Let me know if you have any other organs affected by this allergy.

The only cure for allergies is avoid exposure to allergens. You can avoid formaldehyde in solution forms by the following measures:
1.Protective and barrier method:You can use Gloves made of nitrile, neoprene, butyl rubber or polyethylene laminate may protect against exposure.
2.Avoid or reduce exposure to formaldehyde sources like fabric made clothes ,household disinfectants, paints. You can use alternative disinfectants which contains Hydrogen peroxide, ethyl alcohol, polythene glycol.
3.Wear pure cotton, silk or nylon clothes, this cloth contains less formaldehyde. And cover you body with clothes by using long sleeves especially arms and legs.
4.Whenever you buy new clothes please wash the clothes with soap water before you wear.

If you also have respiratory complaints from formaldehyde fumes, using face masks is an option. Ventilation in room is most important, keep doors open it will reduce exposure. Whenever you expose to it and you feel irritation wash your body and eyes as soon as possible.

Besides that whenever you buy products kindly read labels to avoid formaldehyde and its preservatives.you can take products which is contains less than 0.1ppm.

Lastly you can also discuss about immunotherapy for allergy after investigations and diagnosis as a means to treat allergies.

Hope I have answered your query.
