Question: I recently had a colonoscopy on April 2, I began experiencing pain in my lower right side and I have been unable to have a bowel movement. I called the treating physician and was unable to contact him even through his answering service. Should I take a laxative?

Brief Answer:
Wait for a day if there is no discomfort.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read and understood your history of colonoscopy on April 2. Had burning radiating pain that went from the lower right side and across my abdomen. Not experienced that pain since, April 3rd. and unable to have bowel movement. Could not contact treating Physician. Wants to know whether to take laxative?

Since the bowel preparation clears all the contents of the intestine, it is possible that one may take few days to have normal bowel movement. One is kelp nil orally for some time at least 12 to 36 hours or may be just on liquids.

If there is no other problem like pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting or even discomfort of not passing motion, you can take a full diet good amounts of the stuff which you may gives you good motion and wait for 24 hours to see the results.
Laxative is better avoided.
Of course try to contact your Physician again for further clearance of thinking.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis, and get a proper further treatment. Please feel free to ask for more or if you need further clarifications or if you feel there is a gap of communication.
