Question: I wake up about 4 hours after going to sleep and have to defecate a number of times which leaves me tired even if I succeed in getting back to sleep. What do you think is the cause? I don't have diarrhea though the stool is unformed by the second or third time in the bathroom.

Brief Answer:
Food allergy can be the case.

Detailed Answer:

Thank you for the query.

Such symptom can be caused by food allergy or intolerance. Especially if you eat same thing every evening. It may be milky product for example.
Any bowels problems over the age of 50 should be checked with possible large intestine tumors. As such tumors do not give any specific symptom, every symptom is alarming at your age.
I suggest you to perform simple test. Try to miss your last meal before sleeping and see if this will help. If yes, food allergy tests should be done.

And you should have done colonoscopy for sure.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.

So I should skip eating dinner? I usually eat at around 7 p.m. I know I'll be extremely hungry if I do this and that will also make it hard to sleep. Yesterday for dinner I had roasted dark meat chicken, candied sweet potatoes and niblets corn. I also had half a corn muffin. I did snack on nuts and sesame sticks at around 11 p.m. However I've been getting this most nights no matter what I eat. I've been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Do you think that could be the reason? I think I've also had times when I woke up earlier than I wanted to even without the bathroom problem though it usually plays a big role. I had a colonoscopy twice in my life and am not due for another one for 2 years. My colon was fine.

Brief Answer:
Hyperthyroidism can be the reason for sure.

Detailed Answer:
Hyperthyroidism can be the reason for sure. Intestines hyperactivity is known symptom of hyperthyroidism. You may try to skip dinner. Or at least eat something light like a toast with cheese for example.
If you have had the colonoscopy done, you are colon cancer safe.

Hello. I have had a clogged bile duct a few times and my Dr. in the next few months will be performing a ERCP to see if again this is the case. I have had the last few bowel movements, black stool, very black and dark. Do you feel this is serious or could it be from just eating maybe blueberry muffins that I had? Many thanks for your help.

My uncle is 90 years old, weighs 122, 5' 9" tall. He lives alone in his own home. His medication consists on only 1 lasix pill per day. He had a colonoscopy about 4 months ago and was diagnosis with diverticulitis with no particular follow up problems. Lost his wife 4 years ago and doesn't know how to cook. He mostly eats Flax seed muffins twice a day and not much else but eats out maybe twice a week. 1 1/2 years ago he had a blood sugar test that was on the high side but he did not fast and had eaten out and had a lot of different desserts at golden corral before the test so he is afraid of diabetes. There is no family history. I am going July 4th to teach him some easy things to cook and grill. He has decided that he is wasting away loosing more weight from not eating and has decided that it is time to start eating regular food and meals regardless. "My legs are very week and I would rather die from diabetes than starve to death." He has always been a strong hard working man. What would be the most important things for him to eat. How can I encourage him to stop eating so many flax seed muffins. P.S. He is in a small Texas country town with 1 very little restaurant open for lunch. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

I get diarrhea intermittently not every day and only in the morning. I've been told the kabucha can help calm my digestion. I don't eat the same thing every day - today I had coffee Greek yogurt with blueberries and 1/2 English muffin .
