Question: Sleep Apnea Treatment

Answered by Dr. Dr. Prasad J (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Depends on severity...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Treatment for sleep apnea is based on the number of apnea spells developed. Sometimes sleep studies are performed to record number of apnea events. If the number of apnea is graded as severe, it should be treated with breathing assistant devices like CPAP.

If the spells are mild, then managing weight and any preexisting nasal conditions will be sufficient. Sometimes nasal / oral surgeries could be performed to improve the condition.

In all, the right and specific treatment is individualized after a thorough investigation to the cause and severity of sleep apnea.

Hope this information suffices. Let me know if you need any other information.

Brief Answer:
Breathing assisted device is helpful...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Most patients with severe sleep apnea need breathing assisted device - BiPAP or CPAP. Your treating doctor can decide which is best for you and the right pressure settings.

In addition to these, I encourage you to maintain ideal body weight. If you are overweight, you can check with your doctor if your weight is causing an obstruction behind the throat and if it can be corrected surgically.

You should follow up with your treating doctor who will be able to modify pressure settings and decide on the future course of treatment.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Brief Answer:
Humidifiers...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It is not uncommon to see patients complain of dryness (mouth and nose) after using CPAP. It is the effect of continued pressure especially if you are breathing with open mouth. Ask your partner to know if you are breathing with open mouth; if so, using a chin strap can reduce dryness.

Also check if your CPAP machine has an integrated humidifiers. Some CPAP machine comes with heated humidifier to combat dryness. Check with your vendor.

In addition to this, making sure you are adequately hydrated helps in combating dryness during CPAP usage.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any other information.
