Should We Be Concerned About Caesarean Delivery

default

Question: Hello,

I would like to discuss the current status of my wife's pregnancy. Since the second month, our midwife has prescribed Labetalol 100mg to maintain her blood pressure as it was consistently around 90/130. According to the sonography, the expected delivery date is March 20, 2024. However, over the past two days, her blood pressure readings have been around 95/140. This morning, we used our Omron HEM 7140T1 blood pressure monitor, which showed a reading of 93/147. Concerned, we visited our midwife, whose monitor recorded a reading of 100/150. She has advised us to prepare for admission tomorrow morning and has suggested a cesarean delivery. Additionally, she adjusted the dose of the blood pressure medication for tonight.

My question is, should we be concerned about this situation, or is it possible to request a change in the dosage of the blood pressure medication so we can wait a few more days in hopes of a normal delivery? It's worth noting that the cervix was not dilated during today's examination.

Thank you for your guidance. Prescription is attached for your reference.

Brief Answer:
BP readings are high. Better to go for caesarean delivery

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us
BP readings of 150/100 are high even after taking labetolol regularly.
She is already 39 weeks pregnant. Waiting for normal delivery and labour pains will cause reduction in liquor around the baby and will compromise with the baby's breathing. It is best to go with your gynaecologist 's advice and admit her for caesarean delivery.
High blood pressure at full term can cause compromise of baby's well being.
Hope this answer is helpful.
Any further queries are welcome
