Should Antibiotics Be Given In Case Of Persistent Cough,running Nose Along With Yellow White Mucus After Getting Treated For Viral Fever In A 10-month Old Baby?

Question: Hi my 10 month old baby is having viral fever since Thursday. The temp is all normal, but he has running nose & cough. We took him to ped who gave mucolite drops, sinarest AF drops.But the mucus is yellowish white now. Should we wait or start antibiotics. The cough has not improved.

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.
I don't consider the color of mucus as a marker of bacterial or viral infection. So antibiotic decision cannot be done based on this.
Other symptoms like persistent high-grade fever, cough, breathing difficulty are more suggestive of bacterial infection.
I won't get worried for yellow color mucus if the child is otherwise active, taking feeds well, there is no fever or breathing difficulty. Continue giving Mucolite which helps in thinning of mucus and Sinarest-AF as prescribed.
Yellow colored mucus can be due to dehydration. I would suggest you to give plenty of fluids, watch for abnormal symptoms and consult your pediatrician accordingly.
