On Friday, I Was Working In The Garage And Dropped

default

Question: On Friday, I was working in the garage and dropped a pry bar on my foot, mostly hitting my ankle where there is a small cut from it (that area doesn't hurt at all). My foot hurt but seemed fine. Saturday the side of my foot along my big toe started hurting, is a little puffy/red and hurt to walk. It feels like someone is stabbing the joint. Yesterday it got worse and now the pain is spreading through my whole foot up to my ankle and it really hurts to walk around. Last night/this morning it is a constant strong ache and very painful to walk on. There is no puncture wound at the site where it is puffy. I took some ibuprofen that did reduce the pain some. I think that it is an infection of some sort. Perhaps it got in through the cut or maybe I got a metal shaving/splinter in it that I can't see.I think it's an infection is because it's getting worse every day instead of better. I don't think that anything is broken. I've attached pics.

Brief Answer:
It can be infected.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

It would be better if you send a photo at YYYY@YYYY in order that I can give you a better opinion.
Reading your symptoms I believe that it can be infected.
Possibly the cut you had previously may have caused the infection.
You may need to take antibiotics to treat it.
Use cold compresses on them to reduce swelling and use ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

I sent the pictures to the email address you provided.

Ibuprofen seems to be helping a little bit.

Can you prescribe antibiotics to help?

Brief Answer:
Seems like gout

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
I see the photo you attached and it doesn't seem infected.
The skin over it is red but untouched.
It looks more like gout, inflammation of the joint , usually big toe due to increased uric acid levels in blood stream.
You may need to test uric levels in blood and do a x-ray of the joint.

Taking antibiotics is not needed.
You may need to take antiinflammatory drugs such ibuprofen or naproxen. Colchicine is preferable.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

hello. thank you for your opinion. I would agree it seems it could be gout given what you said and what I just read about online. Can you prescribe the colchicine?? I have been taking ibuprofen all day but it still hurts quite a lot. Thanks.

You can take prescription from your GP.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
I don't think you can take colchicine without prescription and I don't believe you can take it with my prescription in XXXXXXX , United States.
You may need prescription from your GP.
