Question: My wife (age 56) has dull ache or, as she describes it, a knot, just below sternum for the last 48-72 hours. Feels slightly like indigestion. Sleeping more than normal, but no fever. No acid reflux or burning in throat. Any ideas as to cause? She has underactive thyroid and being treated with Synthroid for many years with not symptom like this one.

Brief Answer:
Needs evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

After going through the medical details provided by you I can understand your concern and I would like to tell you that such atypical symptoms could be because of gastritis or could also be due to underlying cardiac issues. Gastritis as a cause is not a emergency situation but if it’s happening because of cardiac issues then it need evaluation asap.

The only way to make sure is to visit an ER and get her evaluated as soon possible because she will be requiring an ECG and an echocardiography and probably blood test to rule out cardiac problem.

I hope this information will guide you properly.

Kind Regards
Dr Bhanu Partap
