My Son Has Had A Chronic Cough Since He Moved
Question: My son has had a chronic cough since he moved in my moms house at 7 months old . It started at night witha. Hacking dry cough almost like gag reflux ... he has had a chronic cough ever since and is now 14 months old . I took him to hosptial after. A month of his coughing continued Becuase I was worried and demanded a x Ray and it showed pneumonitis . They think it was due to a virus . But I’m paranoid about hypersensitivity pneumonitis . We had. Chickens in a coop outside that I got rid of a couple months ago and recently also got the house checked for mold and the air sample was clean as can be . Nothing was in the air at the moment but the swan test not he floor came back aspergillus/penicillium. For months I asked his pulmonist and allergist if it could be from any of those things.. they both said they doubt its hypersensitivity pneumonitis and gave him Flovent which he has been on for months .. he has never had a CT Becuase he’s only 1 years old . The allergist also told me that he can’t be allergic to mold until he’s around 2 . It’s not enough exporsue to cause hypersensitivity , but what about the chickens or down feather sofa ? He also had a swallowing disorder where he coughs on thin liquids .. last x Ray did show superhilar opacity which the doctor thinks is just a mucus plug since he has no rales or anything like a fever to indicate infiltration. We will repeat the X-ray in 4 weeks . And if persist then will get a CT scan.
Brief Answer:
His symptoms are more likely due to aspiration.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
I have gone through the detailed history you have given.
I also don't think it's hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HSP) because of age.
In my opinion, he is having all these because of chronic aspiration.
You mentioned that he is having coughing while swallowing liquids.
This leads to micro aspirations, pneumonia like changes.
So get done repeat chest x ray and CT thorax.
Also ask for need of bronchoscopy.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your son. Thanks.

We are putting him on simply thick thickener .. I was worried about necrotizing endocolitis but it’s only for babies under 12 months of age . We are most deff gonna reaper the X-ray and continue to work on his swollowing issue . His pulmonist thinks it’s mainly due to respires viruses and irritants like smoke . But he doesn’t think it’s HP though or what they call farmers lungs . He doesn’t have rales or anything extremely sick sounding just a bad chronic dry hacking cough . That’s his only chronic symptom .
Repeated viruses * as young ones catch them often and it takes a while to get over bronchiolitis and stuff
So as far as fibrosis goes though you think I can rest my worries a little bit ?
So when the ER said he has pneumonitis on the X-ray . That doesn’t necessarily mean HSP though right ?
His first X-ray showed pneumonitis the doctor said .. but
His last x Ray months later showed peribronchial cuffing and left superhilar opacity. No word of pnuemonitis . I’m just confused with x Ray readings terminology and confusing it with a actually diagnosis of illness

Thanks for your follow up question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
No need to worry for HSP (hypersensitivity pneumonitis).
And yes, no need to worry for fibrosis also as he is very young.
Just make sure he gets CT and bronchoscopy timely.
